Who is Cherry?
JSM-02C "Cherry" is a marionette (female android) in the series Saber Marionette
J (and others, as described below). Cherry is a special marionette in
that she possesses a "maiden circuit", which is a sort of limited
emotion / pseudo-personality chip that was based on one particular
aspect of the designer's personality. Three separate chips were
created that emulated different aspects of this personality, and
Cherry received the one designated as "motherhood" as
well as much of the higher intelligence and scouting functions. Cherry is the
second special marionette that is discovered by Otaru Mamiya (the
others being Lime and Bloodberry), and as he was the one who activated
her she has a strong attraction to him. Cherry tends to act very
polite usually, but she does have bouts of anger and has a small bit
of a scheming nature. She seems to fall into the sterotypical
wife/homemaker role generally, but she also has combat abilities,
described below in the Special Abilities section. Cherry tends to
think of herself as the innocent and pure type, but she does have a
bit of an ego and sense of self-importance; she also has a bad habit
of falling into a "love-struck fantasy" mode when thinking about Otaru. One thing is for certain, though... do not insult her cooking or you will quickly find yourself on the wrong side of a frying pan!
Cherry's appearance is a bit on the exotic side, but this is not
really recognized in the series itself as many of the characters in
Saber Marionette J tend to have odd appearances. Cherry has
extremely long purple hair, but oddly enough this length is restricted
to the eartails, which she keeps tied at the end. One of the most
prominent aspects of Cherry's outfit is the two large sensor pods and
large pink bow she wears in her hair as an ornament. The rest of her
outfit is entirely pink, and is vaguely based on a kimono. In fact, the
undergarment that she wears indoors is pretty much the standard kimono
undergarment, a short juban that she also uses like a chef's hippari
when cooking, but she wears a large lighter-pink covering over it when
outside. Her shoes are also notable; they are very large and seem to
be based on a cross between tennis shoes and geta, and they make a
distinctive sound when she walks. I have heard her appearance
described alternately as "a pink creampuff" and "a UFO catcher doll
gone horribly wrong", and strangely enough both descriptions actually
seem to fit.
Series Appearances
Some version of Cherry appears in all of the incarnations of the Saber
Marionette series - Saber Marionette J (TV, OAV, audio drama, and
stories serialized in Dragon Magazine), Saber Marionette J to X (TV),
Saber Marionette R (OAV and audio drama), SM Girls Gaiden Saber
Marionette Z (manga) - although the one focused on here is from Saber
Marionette J. The character of Cherry in Saber Marionette R has
basically the same personality and voice of the Saber Marionette J Cherry but a very
different appearance; they are not necessarily meant to be the same
character (the later Cherry marionette was supposedly based on the
earlier one, but the continuities don't mesh very well considering
that Saber Marionette R takes place chronologically after Saber Marionette J but was actually created
first). The SM Girls Gaiden Saber Marionette Z manga takes place
following the events of Saber Marionette R, and as such the Cherry of that storyline is also not the
Cherry of Saber Marionette J. Cherry from Saber Marionette J to X is the same character as the one in
Saber Marionette J, but the character designs are quite a bit different.
Special Abilities
Cherry's abilities can be broken down into two categories - domestic
and combat related. As for her domestic skills, Cherry is an
excellent cook, and she is specifically noted for her pickles. She is
the only special marionette shown to have this ability in the series, with the exception of NSM-X1 "Marine" who learns how to cook from watching Cherry.
Her combat skills are along the lines of reconnaissance and strategy,
and of the three Mamiya marionettes she has the greatest sensor range.
Cherry can analyze a combat situation and extrapolate many of the
possible outcomes before taking action; however, this also is a
liability as on occasion when her analysis shows only a small chance
for positive results she will not take action. However, when she is
forced to fight she has demonstrated strength and power greater than
that of a human but less than that of Lime and Bloodberry.
Cherry has two major weaknesses, both psychological. She has a
deathly fear of mice, and being that her marionette body was designed
to look like that of a somewhat underdeveloped teenage girl she can be
angered and sidetracked by commenting on her apparent lack of physical
development. This is especially a sticking point in regards to Otaru,
as she feels that her physical appearance is a stumbling block that
could keep him from liking her. This is one reason that she tries as
hard as she does in the domestic roles she takes on, as she feels that
she has to compensate for this in order to gain his attention.
