Who is Kasumi?
Kasumi Tendo is the caretaker of the Tendo household in the series
Ranma ½. She generally manages the household finances, does all the
cooking, and tends to the household chores. As the oldest of the
Tendo sisters, she took on this responsibility when their mother died
many years ago; as such she is the "mother" figure of the household.
Kasumi has never really demonstrated being angry or frustrated at
anything even considering the work she has to do - she is almost nice
to a fault. Also, she is the only character that seems remotely
normal in the Ranma ½ series; most of the other major characters
demonstrate superhuman strength and reflexes and/or have extreme
personality quirks. Kasumi does appear rather oblivious to the
strangeness that goes on around her, but considering the weirdness
that goes on in Nerima with the group that lives under her roof it is
probably more of a sanity-saving reflex to simply ignore than to
rationalize. However, she does exhibit more intelligence and
perceptive ability that one might imagine.
Kasumi is rather plain looking as she does not go out of her way to
embellish herself, and she is usually seen wearing a long dress (often
with apron) with her hair tied into a ponytail and draped over one
shoulder. Her wardrobe appears to be mainly dresses of a dated
fashion that would seem to be more appropriate for an older woman
(perhaps some were her mother's) as I feel that many of the designs do
not appear to be ones that someone her age would typically wear.
Series Appearances
Kasumi appears in all incarnations of the Ranma ½ series (TV, OAV,
movies, and manga). There is no real difference in her character from
one version to another other than her appearance being slightly
different depending on the artist / character designer.
Special Abilities
Kasumi is one of the few Ranma ½ characters that can actually cook edible food. She is well versed in many different types of cooking (in contrast to Ukyo, who concentrates on one particular cuisine). This is a learned skill that she cultivated from reading and practicing the recipes in her late mother's cookbook, but it could be said that of the three Tendo sisters Kasumi was the one who received their mother's talent. She also tends to have some perceptive ability and is perhaps more intelligent than most of the rest of the cast combined (even though this is rarely demonstrated and she usually comes across as being rather naïve).
