Who is Sora?
Sora Hasegawa is a relatively minor character in Oh My
Goddess, one year behind Keiichi Morisato at the Nekomi Institute
of Technology. She is a member of the NIT Motorcycle Club and at one
point was in the running for the leadership of the group. She is also
a member of the NIT softball club, of which Megumi Morisato is the
captain. She does not generally have much importance in the story as
a whole, although there are a few manga chapters that showcase her in
particular. Interestingly enough, Belldandy took a liking to Sora,
and she tends to help her whenever she has problems even if it means
helping her in lieu of Keiichi (and at one point even siding with Sora
in a competition between her and Keiichi). She is a very shy person,
and is also quite clumsy as well; her lack of self-esteem often
precludes her from interacting with people.
Sora fits the stereotypical description of a "mousy girl" perfectly,
from her appearance (plain pageboy hairstyle, large round glasses that
give her a studious appearance, freckles, and her rather plain fashion
sense) to her personality (intelligent but reserved and very shy
around others). She also appears to be a bit younger than she really is; on one occasion she was mistaken for a middle school student, much to her
chagrin.
At one point she appeared to have a crush on Toshiyuki Aoshima (NIT's
resident handsome-yet-sleazy guy), but she apparently grew out of that
after a while.
Series Appearances
Sora appears in the Oh My Goddess OAVs, movie, and manga
series. She has a very small cameo in the OAV series and the movie,
but her character appears to be pretty much the same as her manga
counterpart.
Special Abilities
Sora is completely and utterly average. She has no real special
abilities to speak of, and perhaps listing what she cannot do would be
easier. First off, she had almost a talent for bad cooking. Her
cooking did improve after Belldandy started teaching her how to cook,
and she did manage to create something that was actually edible.
However, her cooking has not been demonstrated after that point so it
is unknown whether or not she truly overcame this stumbling block.
Secondly, she is very much a klutz, and this contributed to her having
such a low opinion of herself. In general, she is frightened of
trying new things and often needs someone to walk her through them.
She also has a fairly low tolerance for alcohol (probably due to her
small size), which is used for comic effect at times; when drunk she
is shown to be much less inhibited... and a truly awful
singer...
Despite her flaws, she usually has a rather sunny outlook overall when
she is not concentrating on herself. She seems to genuinely enjoy
helping others in whatever capacity she can, and her self-esteem
problem (while still existing) has been greatly reduced by her
association with Belldandy.
