Who is Sylphiel?
Sylphiel Nels Lahda is the daughter of Eruk Nels Lahda, a former
priest/noble of the holy city of Sairaag in the series
Slayers. She is a shrine maiden who feels a strong need to
help others, especially considering the events in Sairaag following
her father's death. She does not like to see others in distress and
tries in any way she can to help people in need. A strongly religious
person, Sylphiel has concentrated on the positive magics such as those
concerned with healing and has achieved a much greater proficiency at
white magic than any of the other human characters in
Slayers.
Sylphiel has long dark purplish hair and dresses in the uniform of
a cleric of the Sairaag shrine. Her outfit is almost entirely purple
and blue, with the notable elements of a cape, large epaulets, and a
part down the front similar to that of a medieval-style belt.
One notable aspect of Sylphiel is that she has a strong liking for
Gourry Gabriev. He apparently traveled to Sairaag at some point in
the past and managed to accidentally save the town; it is supposed
that Sylphiel met him due to her father being a noble of the town.
She has been smitten with him ever since and has not expressed any
interest in anyone else even after it was fairly well demonstrated
that Gourry and Lina Inverse were a couple, but she finally appears to
come to terms with this considering her nature of always wanting the
best for others despite personal sacrifice.
Series Appearances
Sylphiel appears in the Slayers TV series (in
Slayers and Slayers Next) as well as the manga
series, and the novels that both were based on. I do not know enough
about either the manga series or the novels to point out any
similarities or differences in how she is portrayed so I must stick to
her characterization in the animated series.
In both Slayers and Slayers Next Sylphiel only
appears near the end of the series, as both series end in the city of
Sairaag. She apparently does not travel outside the local area of the
city, and as such she is not seen elsewhere nor does she travel with
the main group when they go on their adventures.
Special Abilities
Sylphiel is the strongest demonstrated human white magic user in the Slayers series; she possesses both the knowledge and the magical capacity to cast both Resurrection and a very strong variant of Recovery. She also has the ability to cast strong protection barriers that can even protect against direct offensive magic attacks by high-level wizards. Interestingly enough, she has also demonstrated knowledge of at least one offensive black magic spell, the Dragon Slave. Apparently she decided to learn this spell after it was shown that Lina Inverse could use it in order to "compete" with Lina over Gourry - she believed that she would need to know how to cast this if she ever traveled with Gourry, especially considering the trouble he manages to get into. (Little does she know that most of the troubles that follow Gourry are usually directly caused by Lina's actions.)
One area of magic that Sylphiel has not demonstrated any amount of competence in is that of shamanist fire magic. She seemingly does not possess the ability to control fire magic, or does not grasp the underlying principles as her attempts at using it have been nothing less than pathetic.
Outside of magic, one of Sylphiel's noted skills is her ability to cook. Even Gourry remembered this about her, which seems to indicate that it is something special indeed.
